Our findings suggest that, while children affected by HIV should have the same care options open to them as other children, often this is not the case. In many parts of the world, these children are less likely to be cared for by parents, extended families or foster carers, and are far more likely to be found in harmful forms of residential care. To widen the care choices of children affected by HIV, it is essential to provide more support to families, as well as efforts to increase investment and reduce discrimination in care systems.
