Forget Facebook, mobile phones and even friends, family is the one thing we just can’t live without, says the British public. In fact, they’re so important to us, 80% are planning to spend the upcoming Diamond Jubilee with family. Even though they’re the most annoying people in our lives.

In research conducted by EveryChild as part of our 10th anniversary celebrations, we discovered that just like the Queen, the majority of us plan to spend the Bank Holiday weekend with our families. Despite the fact that 45% of people asked admitted that their family were the most annoying people in their lives. More annoying even than bosses (22%) and work colleagues (19%).

But from annoyance comes love – 81% of responders told us they couldn’t live without their families. While only 50% said they couldn’t live without their friends, 33% without their phone and 12% without Facebook.

This research highlights just how vital families are to us all, a conviction that underpins everything EveryChild does. Across the world 24 million children are growing up alone. Without the love and protection a caring family provides, many of these children face violence, exploitation, extreme poverty and abuse. With the generous support of members of the public, we work tirelessly to keep families together, keep children safe and get children back into safe, caring families whenever we can.

Our Chief Executive, Anna Feuchtwang, says, “As these statistics prove, family is the one thing we just can’t live without. When children are at risk of growing up alone, the consequences can be horrific. That’s why EveryChild works to highlight the importance of a child’s right to a safe, caring family.”
