In 1996, world leaders agreed on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to improve the lives of the world’s poorest people by 2015, including halving extreme poverty and ensuring universal primary education. As we approach this deadline, our government has an important role to play in developing new goals and they are calling on the public to tell them which issues are most important.
EveryChild strongly believes it is vital that those in poverty, especially vulnerable children, are consulted on the new goals.
We’ve been building support for our work amongst MPs, and an Early Day Motion (EDM) that all MPs can sign has been submitted about our work and the new set of goals. You can read the EDM here.
Take action now:
1. Find your MP here: http://www.writetothem.com
2. Write your letter into the message box. Something like:
“As we near the end of the Millennium Development Goals in 2015, the UK government is involved in global discussions on what should follow. I’d like to know what the government is doing to ensure vulnerable children around the world are included in any news goals, and are asked which issues are most important to them. I am particularly concerned about those living without the care of a safe, loving family.
I also request that you sign EDM 114, supporting the work of EveryChild in ensuring that the security of family life is provided for vulnerable children without parental care in the international guidelines that will replace the Millennium Development Goals”
3. Send your message! Encourage your friends and family to write to their MPs too. The more people ask, the more attention we will get from politicians. Together let’s get those in power to involve the powerless in their plans.
Our 10 for 10 visit Downing Street!
On the 15th May 6 of our visitors helped us mark the International Day of Families by delivering letters to David Cameron. We asked that the 24 million children across the world currently living without parental care are considered in the UN’s new development goals.
