We met with community leaders and parents and I was amazed by what you have achieved in four short years. They described how their attitudes had changed and how committed they are to working with the EveryChild team to stop abuse and exploitation of children. I learnt how you support children to deal with their challenges, and to engage with education and skills training. I was astonished that you achieve so much with so few resources.
I met my sponsored child Ruth, her teacher, her mother, her grandparents and neighbours who clearly showed us what a difference you are making to their community. Her mother could not believe that the sponsors could really travel all the way to see her child.
A highlight of our visit was a visit to the school, where we were welcomed by the staff and children. The school has eight classes and four teachers, with only six classrooms which means that the other two classes learn under a tree, sitting on small benches.
I also visited the Mndolera Project to see the EveryChild Resource Centre there. I learnt how the Mother’s
Group has worked to change cultural practices that infringe on the rights of girls. The Child Rights Club sang a song in praise of sponsorship and children’s rights. The visit ended as I was shown around some people’s gardens to see the crops they grow.
I am sure that if sponsors understood how important the relationship is to the children’s families and communities, they would write more often to the children and more would try to visit. Thank you for making my visit a very special experience.”
