Report launch at the House of Commons

Tuesday 14th July 2010 by Anna

On Tuesday EveryChild, together with other international children’s organisations, went to Westminster to launch a new report Protect for the Future about the international Millennium Development Goals and their impact on children who don’t have parents, families and communities to look after them. We were hosted by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Street Children and were thrilled that so many MPs, veterans as well as newly-elected turned up to hear what we had to say.

The children EveryChild works with are very far removed from the people who have the power to make a difference to their lives. They don’t have parents and families to look out for them and they live below the radar of most government and non-government agencies. So we work hard to get to those in power in the countries where these children live, and to our own government in the UK to persuade them to implement legislation they have signed up to and to uphold children’s rights. Events like the one held in parliament on Tuesday are an important way of holding governments to account.

We came together as a group of organisations with a wide range of experience working with children that don’t have parents and families to support them – including Save the Children, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, War Child  and specialist organisations working with street children.

We all work for children who are living apart from their parents and families. Children living on the street, children in institutional care, children working for other people’s families or for exploitative employers, children heading their own families of brothers and sisters, children held in detention. These children are often not counted and frequently feel like they don’t count.
