She is 14, wakes at 4am and works until 7pm – all because her parents owe £480

Living deep in the rural interior of India, Vinothini may never hear of the film Slumdog Millionaire or the furore this week over allegations that Rubina Ali, one of its child actors, was offered for sale by her father in a £200,000 adoption deal.

Police insisted yesterday that there was no evidence that Rubina’s father, who lives with his nine-year-old daughter in a slum in Mumbai, had tried to sell her.

Only 600 miles away however, in the rural heart of Tamil Nadu, Vinothini, 14, knows all about the thriving Indian trade in child labour. Read about Vinothini in The Times or look through the photo gallery below:
