EveryChild joins campaign to protect trafficked children

EveryChild joins Thr3e Small Steps campaign

On the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in Britain, EveryChild has joined a campaign which calls on the British Government to do more to protect children trafficked into the UK.
The Thr3e Small Steps campaign, launched by ECPAT UK and World Vision, seeks to strengthen the Government's commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child on Immigration and Nationality to ensure that children illegally trafficked into the UK are guaranteed protection.

As EveryChild works to prevent children from becoming separated from their family or community in many of the countries from which children are trafficked to the UK, this issue is very important to us. Once away from the care and attention of loving parents or guardians, this modern day form of slavery exposes children to some of the worst forms of abuse and exploitation.

Thr3e Small Steps

The Thr3e Small Steps campaign calls on the Government to do three things to protect very vulnerable children who have experienced the horrors of being bought and sold by professional child traffickers:

  • Withdraw the UK reservation to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child on Immigration and Nationality.
  • Ratify the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings.
  • Appoint an independent national Child Trafficking expert with ongoing responsibility for this issue.

And please do send us copies or let us know of any responses you get. These children are the victims of a terrible crime, and as such they deserve our support and protection. Just thr3e small steps is all it takes.
