A new EveryChild project which will spare children from a life on the streets in Ethiopia has been given the green light, following funding from the Allan & Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust.
The Creating a Safer Environment for Children project aims to reach out to children who are at risk of becoming street children and support them to stay living in their communities and with families.
The project will establish child protection training for NGO staff and develop a community based, child focused social work system to support these children. The funding received will allow the first stage of the project to go ahead.
The work will be initially based in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world, with 98% of the population struggling to survive on little more than £1 a day. Thousands of children live on the streets and many others are at risk of becoming separated from their families due to issues such as abuse, violence, and exploitative child labour. The project will aim to reach out to these children.
Tsegaye Chernet, EveryChild’s consultant in Ethiopia, said: “This funding allows us to start a project which we hope will see hundreds of children spared a dangerous life on the streets of Addis Ababa. We’re looking forward to commencing the important work of keeping children with their families and communities, where their chances in life will be much greater.”
