On World Day Against Child Labour, the international children’s charity, EveryChild warns that there are still 218 million child labourers worldwide, and 126 million of these children are engaged in hazardous work.
EveryChild is joining the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in marking the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the landmark ILO Convention No. 182, which calls on governments and companies around the world to take action to tackle the worst forms of child labour.
Anna Feuchtwang, Chief Executive of EveryChild, says:
“It is totally unacceptable that in every continent of the world child labour still exists. For many children this means growing up in hazardous environments away from families, and missing out on an education. Their lives are a daily ritual of repetitive labour. For millions, childhood is over by the age of five.”
