New child sponsorship programme starts in Cambodia

EveryChild’s My Home is Not the Street programme in Cambodia is now benefiting from child sponsorship.

In the remote region of Kom Rieng, Western Cambodia, children are in danger of becoming separated from their families. The Kom Rieng district was one of the last to be freed from the brutalities of the Khmer Rouge regime, which left behind a legacy of family breakdown.

In Kom Rieng there are high levels of domestic violence and parents spend long periods of time away from home, working across the Thai border. For many children a poor quality of family life can lead them onto the streets.

A shocking 20,000 Cambodian children live on the streets, where they are vulnerable to violence, trafficking and being forced into strenuous manual labour.

Now, with the help of EveryChild’s My Home is Not the Street programme, the communities in Kom Rieng are being supported to become safe havens for their children.

With the help of our UK sponsors we are working to protect children at risk of ending up on the streets by creating safe shelters where they can be looked after, and offering skills training and other schemes which will allow communities to generate their own incomes and end the cycle of poverty.
