In March 2010 EveryChild’s partnership with The Romanian Foundation for Children, Community and Family (FRCCF) came to an end. It is always our aim to create sustainable projects which can become independent and carry on long into the future. FRCCF can now access funding from the EU and are well-positioned to access additional funding in the future. FRCCF will continue to provide services through their well-established community centres.

Our achievements in Romania

EveryChild started working in Romania after Ceausescu’s regime collapsed in 1989. Our aim was to keep children in families and provide vital alternative care to large-scale institutions. In 1997 we helped establish FRCCF who continue to work in day care centres and provide services to children at risk of dropping out of school, being neglected, abused or abandoned.

Since 1991 the number of children living in institutional care has dropped from 110,000 to 30,000. Today, most of these children are teenagers because it is now illegal for a child under the age of five to be placed in an institution.

Working with our partner FRCCF, EveryChild has achieved great things in Romania and has had a huge impact on helping to improve the lives of vulnerable children. Thanks to our support, there is now a country-wide network of social workers and family support groups who previously did not exist. Many institutions have been closed and the law on family-based care has been revised. Children who previously might have ended up in a large institution now benefit from family-based alternatives like foster care and small group homes.
